Wedding box to create special memories for patients

Southampton Hospital Charity have assembled a wedding box which can be borrowed by in-patients who wish to get married whilst receiving end-of-life treatment here at University Hospital Southampton.

For now, we have one box that is filled with items that have been suggested by staff members on the intensive care units and cancer wards, which is where most of the weddings place.

The box will contain all the necessary items to support a wedding at short notice. This includes:

  • Guest book as a keepsake per couple
  • Bouquets
  • Button holes
  • Bridal headpiece
  • Balloons (latex free)
  • Bunting and banners
  • Confetti
  • Disposable glasses, paper plates and napkins
  • Photo frame
  • Wedding dress

Jane Gould from Southampton Hospital Charity comments:

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this seems like the perfect time to launch our wedding box. We regularly get requests from patients and their families who want to hold weddings in the hospital, so we felt that providing a special wedding box would help take any added stress away at such an emotional time.

“As a Charity, we felt that by having items on hand that can be borrowed by couples wanting to make their day just that little bit more special would enhance the already amazing care provided by our NHS staff.

The guest books are for the couple to keep, but the rest is either disposable or wipeable so that they can be reused. We are really excited to offer this to our patients, and we hope to add to the wedding box in the future.”
