Supporting the Piam Brown ward on International Childhood Cancer Day
International Childhood Cancer Day is a global initiative held on15th February to raise awareness and support for children battling cancer. On this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to improving paediatric cancer care and supporting families through every step of their journey.
With the support of Superior Seals Ltd. Southampton Hospitals Charity has funded the purchase of seven CADD pumps for the Piam Brown Ward at University Hospital Southampton, significantly improving the experience of young cancer patients.
The new pumps will be used for the ambulatory paediatric oncology service, enabling children to receive essential treatments at home or in the charity’s nearby home, reducing the need for long inpatient stays. This advancement in care will provide greater flexibility for patients and their families while improving hospital flow.
The Piam Brown Ward already facilitates at-home treatment for certain immunotherapy patients. However, the introduction of these CADD pumps will allow more children undergoing lengthy treatments to benefit from ambulatory care. The pumps will enable patients to move freely while receiving post-chemotherapy hydration, offering a sense of normality during a challenging time.
Laura Bengree – Lead Nurse Paediatric Oncology , said:
“This donation is a game-changer for our young patients. It means they can spend more time at home, attend school, and maintain daily activities while continuing their treatment safely. It also eases the strain on families, allowing parents to spend less time away from work and ensuring loved ones can stay together.”
A Positive Impact on Families
The ability to receive treatment at home or in the charity’s accommodation means that families experience less disruption to their daily lives. Parents and caregivers can continue working, and siblings can maintain their routines, helping to reduce the emotional and logistical challenges that come with prolonged hospital stays.
Southampton Hospitals Charity remains committed to supporting the hospital’s paediatric services, ensuring young patients receive the best possible care in a setting that prioritises their well-being.
We are incredibly grateful to our supporters for making donations like this possible. If you’d like to support further project like this one, donate today.
