100 Miles for Kids with New Kidneys

A huge shoutout to Dr Shuman Haq, Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist at Southampton Children’s Hospital, and his incredible team, who have once again gone the extra mile to support children with kidney transplants. 

On 25 June, Dr Haq got people talking by cycling on a static bike in the main entrance of University Hospital Southampton to raise awareness of the team’s upcoming 100-mile fundraising challenge.

Cycling for a strong cause  

On Saturday 27 June, the team completed the Kids with New Kidneys charity ride, cycling 100 miles from Evelina London Children’s Hospital to Southampton Children’s Hospital. 

The aim of their challenge was to raise money to help children from Southampton Children’s Hospital who have received kidney transplants attend the British Transplant Games in Sheffield from 6-9 August 2026.

Helping kids build confidence  

Organised by Transplant Active, the British Transplant Games celebrate the strength and resilience of transplant recipients. The Games give children and their families the chance to meet others who understand their journey, take part in a range of sports, build confidence and enjoy an unforgettable experience together. 

Dr Haq first organised the Kids with New Kidneys bike ride in 2021 and has led the challenge every year since. Speaking about why the event is so important, Dr Haq said: 

“The ride helps get the children to the Transplant Games. The Games support exercise, build confidence, and bring children and their families together. It costs a lot of money to send them there, and this is our way of helping them attend.” 

Among those excited to attend this year’s Games is Matti, who described the event as “really fun”. His mum added that one of the best things about the Games is that everyone taking part understands what each family has been through, creating a supportive and welcoming environment.
