Virtual Reality to Repair Hearts at University Hospital Southampton

State-of-the-art VR headsets are now empowering clinicians to visualise and plan treatments for complex heart conditions with unprecedented accuracy and effectiveness.

At Southampton Hospitals Charity, we constantly seek ways to improve patient care through innovative technology. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve introduced state-of-the-art VR headsets that are transforming how we diagnose and plan treatments for complex cardiac conditions.

I think it is fair to say that this is really at the leading edge of imaging technology, allowing us to get as much value as possible from our investigations.
— Dr. Andrew Ho, Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton

These VR headsets give our clinicians an immersive way to interact with 3D data sets, particularly CT scans. This technology allows doctors to visualise and understand complex congenital heart disease in unprecedented detail, facilitating more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans.

These VR headsets offer a significant leap forward in medical imaging:

Enhanced Visualisation

Clinicians can examine 3D models of patients’ hearts in a fully immersive environment, allowing for a deeper understanding of the anatomy and any abnormalities.

Improved Procedural Planning

By virtually exploring the heart and simulating procedures, doctors can better plan complex surgeries and interventions, reducing risks and improving patient outcomes.

The VR headsets have become a routine tool in my assessment of 3D data sets, particularly CT scans. The speed at which I can appreciate the anatomy and the ability to mock-implant devices as part of procedural planning is invaluable.”
— Dr. Andrew Ho, Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton

It is thanks to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to assist with innovative projects like this one. Thank you.
