Bringing art to patients and staff this summer

Workshops for dementia patients

Over the past three months, Southampton Hospitals Charity has funded and organised three distinct series of art workshops for dementia patients at Bassett Ward.

Each series has delved into various materials and techniques, encompassing clay, colour and painting, drawing, and print-making workshops.

Throughout these sessions, attendees found joy in creating artwork, guided by our professional and well-experienced tutor, Jo Bressloff. While Jo provided direction, participants were also encouraged to explore their own artistic ideas. Workshop themes and techniques were tailored to accommodate patients abilities and preferences of both participants and the dedicated staff at Bassett Ward.

Staff Wellbeing Hub

Additionally, we’ve undertaken the commissioning and procurement of numerous artworks and murals for the newly established staff Wellbeing Hub. The Hub serves as a retreat for our hardworking staff, offering solace from the fast-paced hospital environment.

Through art’s transformative power, we aspire to cultivate an environment that supports wellbeing.

One highlight includes a mural at the stairway, created by talented local artist Nathan Evans.

The mural showcases a slogan chosen by staff and has been met with exceptionally positive feedback.

Teenage Cancer Unit

We are excited to share news of our forthcoming series of workshops at the Teenage Cancer Unit. These sessions aim to bring arts joy and therapeutic benefits to patients. To make these workshops truly special, we’ve invited an exceptional artist with expertise in working with specific needs.

Ellen Gillett will lead engaging and customised sessions for teenagers in the unit. Our line up encompasses diverse activities, such as crafting 3D pop-up cards, personalising tote bags, making a badge pin, hexaflexagon making, zine making, and many other exciting art activities for the younger adults!

These workshops will take place in various locations, including activity rooms and bedside settings ensuring even isolated patients can engage safely through one-on-one or classes.

Stay tuned for more updates and let’s continue to create positive impacts through art!
