From Frome to Southampton: A viking’s walk to say thank you

At Southampton Hospitals Charity, we’re always humbled by the amazing ways people choose to give back.

In August, Jordan Manning, treasurer of the South West Ætt of the Midgard Vikings Brotherhood, set out on a 47-mile walk from Frome to Southampton with fellow members Orian Mac and Ian Griffiths.

For Jordan, the walk was about more than distance. It was his way of raising money and saying thank you to the hospital staff who saved his partner’s life when she was just three days old:

She was rushed to Southampton from Yeovil to have emergency heart surgery as she had a condition called TGA. Southampton University Hospital was able to correct this and give her the chance to live a long and happy life with minor issues.

TGA, or transposition of the great arteries, is a rare heart condition where the main blood vessels leaving the heart are swapped over. This means oxygen-rich blood from the lungs is pumped back to the lungs, while oxygen-poor blood from the body is pumped back to the body. Without surgery, the condition is life-threatening.

Thanks to the expertise and care of the hospital staff, Jordan’s partner can now enjoy a long and healthy life.

A walk to remember

That strong sense of appreciation became the driving force behind the brotherhood’s trek. The walk brought blistered feet, aching muscles, and sweltering sunshine, but it also gave them moments they’ll never forget:

About 21 miles in, everything was hurting. It was hot, and the conversation had dried up. Then suddenly, we saw a group of horses running together in perfect harmony across a field. It stopped us in our tracks. It was breathtaking. A reminder of why we were out there walking in the first place.

It’s never too late to give back

Jordan hopes their journey inspires others to support causes close to their hearts. He believes that even small acts of charity can make a big difference, bringing a powerful sense of fullfillment.

For him, the reward comes from knowing you are helping a cause that changes lives – and recognising that you are part of that impact.

Jordan’s dedication has truly made a difference. A big thank you to him, Orian, and Ian for supporting us and raising an amazing £1,750 for patients and staff at University Hospital Southampton.
