Neurology department induction packs for staff

The Wessex Neurological Centre in Southampton provides treatment for disorders affecting the brain, spine, and nerves, and serves a population of over three million people from across the South, including the Channel Islands.

Gail Doran, Care Group Manager for Neurosciences, says: “We have around 550 staff working within the Wessex Neurological Centre.

It is a busy and fast-paced centre and we were conscious that when people joined University Hospital Southampton, they arrive from different places. Staff get a Trust induction, then there are local inductions depending on where individuals are working.

There was nothing to show them that they had joined the neuro family, so as a specialty, we wanted to help them to feel like they belonged and were part of a team.

We partnered with Southampton Hospitals Charity and did a survey with new starters as to what was most useful.

We have since ordered water bottles to keep our staff hydrated on shift, a pen as these are always the hardest things to find when writing notes, and a pocket card with key contact numbers and bleeps as again, it can be disorientating in your first days and weeks.

We are so excited to give these out to our new starters from the start of the New Year. We know how much these little tokens will be appreciated, and it is only through donations to the Charity that this has been possible, so thank you to everyone who gives so generously to the Wessex Neurological Centre.”
