Help support patients and staff as our hospital recovers
In the early hours of Sunday 1 February, a fire broke out in the West Wing of Southampton General Hospital.
More than 500 patients were quickly evacuated and moved safely to other areas of our hospital, thanks to the heroic efforts of our staff who ran to danger rather than away from it.
Everyone was kept safe – but the disruption didn’t end when the fire was out.
Since the fire, which we believe started in the Hospital’s endoscopy unit, we have been in a major incident. Despite the loss of more than 200 bed spaces and more than 30 outpatient clinics, we are working incredibly hard to recover our services.
This is where charitable support makes a real difference.
What your support is already doing
Southampton Hospitals Charity acted straight away, committing £12,500 in immediate support:
- £10,000 to support staff wellbeing, including teams displaced from their usual wards
- £2,500, delivered in partnership with the Patient and Family Support Hub, to provide essential items for patients as they are unable to access their belongings
This is just Phase 1 of the Charity’s response. The effects of the fire haven’t ended now the immediate danger has passed and will impact the hospital for many months to come.
Why donations are needed now
Recovery doesn’t happen all at once.
As services adapt day by day, new practical needs continue to emerge. Donations help us respond quickly – supporting staff working under pressure and helping patients feel comfortable and cared for while treatment continues.
Your gift helps us be ready when the hospital needs extra support.
How you can help
As the hospital continues to adapt, small acts of support make a big difference. Your gift could help with things like:
£20 could help provide essential items for patients
£50 could help boost staff wellbeing
£100 could help Southampton Hospitals Charity respond quickly as needs grow
All donations received as part of our Fire Recovery Appeal will go towards our Priority Fund and will be used across the Hospital where the need is greatest.
