Golf day raises £18,000 for children’s cancer

Unique Plumbing Supplies held a hugely successful golf day where local Hampshire-based plumbers and heating installers came together to thank Southampton’s healthcare services.

Director, Nick Khaira, said: “About 10 years ago I was at a conference, and the person I went with received a phone call from his wife. She said one of their kids was ill and she was taking her to hospital.

I found it alarming that your health can go downhill so quickly.

After a few days I checked in with the family and discovered their daughter had been diagnosed with cancer, and was about to begin treatment in the Piam Brown children’s cancer ward at Southampton Children’s Hospital.

It was touch and go at one point, but thankfully she is now in remission.

Ever since that phone call, we knew we had to help. This is the seventh golf day we have held in support of the ward, and I am grateful to my fellow trade professionals for helping to raise a phenomenal £9,100 this year.

In 2020 we sadly had to cancel the golf day due to coronavirus, so as a business, my wife and I agreed to double whatever money we raised in the 2021 golf day, bringing the donation to an incredible £18,200!

Thankfully the weather held on the day, and 60 players had a fabulous round of golf at Boundary Lakes Golf Course at the Ageas Bowl. This was followed by dinner, including a raffle and auction.

We couldn’t have asked for more!

It also gave us a chance to hear from Southampton Hospitals Charity about what it was like on the ward over the last year, with the children not being able to leave the isolation of their rooms due to coronavirus. It was truly heart breaking.

I started Unique Plumbing Supplies in 2004 and it has continued to expand. As a company we try to give back to our local community, and strive to donate 5% of our net profit to local causes and charities.

All those years ago when we first started organising the golf days, we wanted to give back to a local cause. It fell into place to support the hospital, and we’ve already put a date in the diary for next year so we can do it all over again!”
