Enhancing Southampton’s breast imaging service

The Southampton breast service has consistently high cancer detection rates and low waiting times, exceeding most national standards.

In addition to the multi-disciplinary team involved, this is achieved by performing around 36,000 mammograms, 12,000 ultrasounds, 500 MRI scans, and 1,500 biopsies every year.

We serve women in the Southampton and Salisbury NHS breast screening programme, and all patients with symptoms, male and female, in the Southampton area.

Alexis Grima, Radiology Consultant, says:

We are delighted to have this new multi-functional Hologic vacuum biopsy machine to enhance our service. It means that we can offer our patients a comfortable and safe way of acquiring tissue samples without delay.”

Jeneen Thomsen, Head of Charitable Giving at Southampton Hospitals Charity, says:

This £15,000 machine will really help to provide an all-in-one experience for our breast patients, so thank you to our donors for their support. I want to say a special thanks to Going for Bust Breast Cancer Charity, Beat Breast Cancer, and Southampton West Rotary Club for making this possible.”

Michelle Ormston, Going for Bust Breast Cancer Charity, says:

We are so pleased to be able to continue supporting the Southampton Breast Cancer Unit by providing this £10,000 donation. We know that the equipment will benefit so many patients.”
