Unit celebrates 30 years with opening of new space for teenagers

A paediatric unit that provides care and treatment for children with chronic health conditions has celebrated its 30th anniversary with the opening of a new dedicated space for teenagers.

Located on the Southampton General Hospital site, Bursledon House offers tailored, holistic care in a structured setting, allowing patients to continue their education while having specialised therapy.

It has a focus on physical functioning and emotional wellbeing, enabling children and young people to improve their day to day lives.

The 30-year milestone was marked by the official opening of a new area for teenagers that was made possible thanks to the support of the family and friends of Ben Law, who was treated at Bursledon House.

With the support of Southampton Hospital Charity, the new room, which was previously used as a storage area, has been transformed into the new space for teenagers, known as the ‘teenage hut’. The area is a space where older patients can relax and features ambient lighting, Bluetooth speakers, DVDs and games consoles. The space can also be used for therapy sessions.

Bursledon House sister Lisa Devine said:

Having a space just for teenagers gives them some time away where they can relax and make friends, which makes their stay here more enjoyable. It’s also a great space for our psychologists to have their therapy sessions with the children.”

Patients and their families joined staff to celebrate the anniversary with an opening ceremony for the new facility. The ribbon was cut by Millie Law with psychologist Carolyn West and thank you cards made by patients.
