Alice and David: Running for inclusion

Alice and David’s story is one of determination and redefining possibilities. This April, the couple will be among hundreds taking on the ABP Southampton 10K, running as an assisted duo in support of Southampton Hospitals Charity and championing the message that sport is for everyone.

For David, running has always been a passion. A seasoned marathoner, he found joy in crossing finish lines and embracing the running community. But in July 2023, things changed when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The condition, which progressively impacts movement and muscle strength, began to affect David’s ability to participate in the sport he loved so deeply.

Rather than letting MND define their future, Alice and David found a way to adapt. With the help of their community and charity support, they bought a running wheelchair that allows David to remain an active part of events as an assisted runner. Together, they’ve completed countless Parkruns and races, with Alice running alongside David to push him toward every finish line.

“I’ve worked at University Hospital Southampton for over 26 years,” Alice explains. “This hospital and its people are such a big part of our lives. Supporting Southampton Hospitals Charity through this race feels like the perfect way to give back and honour our connection to this place that’s so close to our hearts.”

David, who retired from his role at the hospital in December 2023, echoes Alice’s passion for creating change. Their shared goal is more than just fundraising—it’s about showing the world that disability should never be a barrier to sport. “We want to spread the message that sport is for everyone,” Alice shares. “Running has been a huge part of David’s life, and the wheelchair has given him a way to stay connected to it. It’s proof that there’s always a way to adapt and keep doing what you love.”

As they prepare to take on the ABP Southampton 10K once again, Alice and David are encouraging others to join the Southampton Hospitals Charity running team. Every mile covered and every donation raised will go toward funding vital projects that support patients and staff across University Hospital Southampton.

By running for Southampton Hospitals Charity, you’ll be making a real difference to local people’s lives, ensuring that our hospital continues to provide the best care, innovation and support for our community.
